Beem Me Up Scottie!

imageEvery since Lebron James’s senior year in high school, he has had to deal with comparisons. Critics and fans has compared him to legends like Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Larry Byrd, and Michael Jordan. Lately, there has been a new measuring stick in the form of basketball hall of famer Scottie Pippen. Pip has been quoted as saying that he was “Lebron before Lebron”. Let’s look at the numbers.

Lebron was the number one draft pick in 2003 and Scottie was picked number five in 1987. James came into the league as the man on his team while Scottie came off the bench. Scottie only averaged 7.9 pts/game his rookie season while Lebron put up 20.9. Lebron made the All-Star game his second season averaging 27.2 pts, 7.4 rebs, and 7.2 asts while it took Pip three years averaging 16.5 pts, 6.7 rebs, and 5.4 asts. The highest point average for a season for Scottie was when Jordan retired the first time in 1995, which was 22.0 pts. Lebron averaged a career high 31.4 pts in 2005.

I guess I can see the comparisons, both are small forwards and they can play every position on the court. To me that’s where the comparisons stop because Scottie was never the scorer that Lebron is. Let’s debate! Tell me what you think.

Do you feel that Scottie’s comparison of LeBron to himself is correct?
