Where Would You Rank Rick Rubin As A Producer?

When you talk about legendary producers, usually Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Marley Marl, & Eric Sermon are the names that’s brought up in the discussion. However, I wonder why Rick Rubin’s name never gets mentioned?

In my opinion, the Def Jam co-founder’s production was very distinctive in my opinion. It could easily be distinguished from the pack with the average listening ear. Most of his production was up beat with Rock infusion. Before Hip Hop, his background was Punk Rock. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Rick has laced tracks for artists such as LL Cool J, Run DMC, The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Jay-Z, & Eminem. That’s not the mention other acts he has worked with outside of Hip Hop such the Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Chicks (formerly known as Dixie Chicks).

I read an article titled “Hip Hop Top 10 Legendary producers” on one of my favorite Hip Hop a few years ago and Rick Rubin’s name wasn’t on the list.  Though it consisted of some dope legends, I questioned if they made a mistake leaving off a guy that has produce for some of Hip Hop’s biggest acts.
