(R&B) ‘What’s The 411?’ or ‘My Life’?

When it comes to music catalog and longevity, there’s only a handful that can compare to Mary J. Blige. Though all her albums play an important role in her career, I think her first two, What’s The 411? and My Life, were the most important in terms of serving as the launching pad. Let’s talk about the aforementioned.

Mary released her debut, What’s the 411? in 1992. The production was R&B — infused with Hip Hop, which gave it an authentic sound. In addition to Mary’s Soulful voice and Hip Hop attire, it validated and differentiated her from the competition.

“Real Love” was the second single from What’s The 411?
“Reminisce” was the third single from What’s The 411?

The album’s intro was fitting for the title. Played as her voicemail, many people from the industry such as Sean “Puffy” Combs, Erick Sermon, Christopher Williams, and CL Smooth, among others, would leave a message.

“You Remind Me” was the album’s first single. It did well on the charts, reaching number 29 and number 1 on Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B Singles chart, respectively.

“Real Love,” “Reminisce,” “Sweet Thing,” and “Love No Limit” were the other singles, which all found success on the charts as well. Perhaps, my favorite cut from the album is “I Don’t Want to Do Anything” featuring — at the time boyfriend and label mate — K-Ci of Jodeci.

The album peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It was certified 3x platinum.

In 1994, Mary released her sophomore, My Life. Unlike her debut, the album wasn’t cross breaded with Hip Hop. It had more of a pure R&B feel to it. She handled majority of the writing duties which made the album personal. Reportedly, Mary was dealing with drug and alcohol abuse. In addition to, being an abusive relationship with K-Ci.

“Be Happy” was the first single from My Life?
“You Bring Me Joy” was the fourth single from My Life?

The album was promoted by six singles; “Be Happy,” “I’m Goin’ Down,” “Mary Jane (All Night Long),” “You Bring Me Joy,” “I Love You,” and “My Life.”

My Life peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200, one spot lower than What’s The 411? However, it’s success would be equivalent — reaching number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It was certified 3x platinum.

Vocalizing over Hip Hop-infused songs earlier in her career earned her the title, “Queen of Hip Hop Soul.”
