(R&B) In Your Opinion, Which is the Better Ginuwine Album?

Artists like R.Kelly, Mary J. Blige, and Keith Sweat, among others, have caused a continuous reminisce of ’90s R&B. Though the ones I’ve aforementioned have gotten recognition in some capacity, there are many that aren’t as accredited as they should be. I think Ginuwine falls in that category.

The Washington D.C. native was consistent and definitely provided his share of hits in the ’90s which continued into the 21st century.

In 1996, Ginuwine released his debut, Ginuwine…The Bachelor. It featured the R&B and Pop hit, “Pony.” In addition, it was promoted by singles such as “Tell Me Do U Wanna,” “I’ll Do Anything/I’m Sorry,” “Holler,” and “Only When Ur Lonely.” The production was handled by Timbaland. The late Static Major lend his pen on a track (“Pony”).

The album peaked at number 26 on the Billboard 200 and 14 on the R&B Albums chart. It would reach double-platinum status (over 2 million copies sold).

In 1999, Ginuwine released his sophomore album, 100% Ginuwine. Timbaland handled the production on this album as well. Static Major would also pen a song on this album (“So Anxious”).

The album was promoted by singles, “What’s So Different?,” “So Anxious,” “Same Ol’ G,” and “None of Ur Friends Business.” It peaked at number 5 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and 2 on the R&B Albums chart. It was certified double-platinum (over 2 million copies sold), his second album to do so.

In 2001, Ginuwine released his third album, The Life. This was the first project Timbaland did not handle majority of the production.  It was promoted by hit singles “There It Is,” “Just Because,” “Differences,” and “Tribute to a Woman.”

The Life reached number 3 on the Billboard 200 and Platinum (over 1 million copies sold).

Though he didn’t achieve as much success on the singles charts, both The Senior and Back II da Basics his fourth and fifth albums, reached the Top Five of the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Ginuwine would release two more albums, A Man’s Thoughts (2009) and Elgin (2011). Though his popularity had swindled, the latter did find some success, reaching number 30 on the Billboard 200.

In hindsight, Ginuwine belong among the ’90s elite class of R&B artists. He had the vocals, the hits, and oh yeah, the dance moves.
