(R&B) The Isley Brothers’ ‘Mission To Please’; Classic, Jammin’, Regular, or Not Impressed?

R&B lovers know the 90’s were a magical time. However, some may have forgotten just how much Soul/Funk group, The Isley Brothers contributed.

Known as the reintroduction album, Mission To Please was released in 1996. With an album of it’s title, they had to create songs that was fitting for the protocol. The opening track, “Floatin’ On Your Love” featuring the underrated Angela Winbush, set the tone.

“I call my baby’s name,” Ron sings. “She gives me everything. She takes me higher and higher, she plays with my desire. She knows my pleasure zone and works it all night long. Her love is slow and slick, told me don’t cum too quick.”

The R.Kelly-penned “Let’s Lay Together,” was another smooth and sensual jam designated for the bedroom.

“Let’s Lay Together” is the first single from Mission To Please

Mission to Please wasn’t just about the largest sleeping area in your house, it was about love in general and exclusively. “Tears,” written and produced by Babyface, was the ultimate compliment to the faithful and loyal mate.

The album covered so many areas. No matter what you were going through in your love life, there were a song for you. If you wanted to compliment your lover for an exceptional experience in the bedroom, the aforementioned “Floatin’ On Your Love” would be the choice of play.

Or if you were missing an old love interest, “Can I Have a Kiss (For Old Times’ Sake?)” could better express how you felt.

“Tears” is the second single from Mission To Please

The Keith Sweat-penned “Slow Is the Way,” closed out the album. It wasn’t a track more suitable. It was well composed, which just so happened to feature Ronald, Angela, Keith and Kut Klose’s vocals on one jam.

Mission to Please is in my top 10 R&B albums of the ’90s. It was a complete body of work, which was by no accident. When you have Ron Isley vocals, in addition to the instrumental input from brothers, Ernie and Marvin. Mixed that with the pen from Angela Winbush, Babyface, R.Kelly, and Keith Sweat, among others, it’s a hint that a classic was the intention.

RIP O’Kelly. JR, Vernon, and Marvin Isley.
