I think it’s safe to say Jeezy and 2Chainz’s The Recession and Based on a T.R.U. Story documented two different times regarding the U.S., which I’ll touch on later in the blog. But more so, I think the two albums make for a great debate.
The Recession dropped first. And may I add it was at a critical time. In 2008, the US economy was experiencing some of it’s worse time since World War II. Obviously, the times inspired the album title.

Big Snow hit us with memorable singles such as “Put On” featuring Kanye West, “Vacation,” “Crazy World,” “My President,” featuring Nas, and “Who Dat.”
Perhaps the most memorable single was “My President.” The US had not seen it’s first African-American president until Barack Obama. The song was a celebration of that.
“My president is black,” Jeezy spits. “My maybach, too And I’ll be god damned if my diamonds ain’t blue.”
The Recession debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200.
By the time Based on a T.R.U. Story dropped, the economy was seeing a slow but steady growth. In other words, we were beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel. 2Chainz definitely gave us a record to celebrate to with “No Lie,” the lead single featuring Drake.
“I am smokin’ on that gas,” Tity Boi spits. “Life should be on Cinemax–Movie, bought my boo bigger tits and a bigger ass.”
“Birthday Song” and “I’m Different” was the album’s second and third singles, respectively. The former featured Kanye West, was played often at the gentleman’s club.
Speaking up gentlemen’s club, “I Luv Dem Strippers” featuring Nicki Minaj was the official booty club anthem.
Based on a T.R.U. Story did phenomenal on the charts, topping the US Billboard 200.
When it comes to dopeness and nostalgic, The Recession and Based on a T.R.U. Story definitely fit the bill. But of course, HHAD is like life: it’s about decisions…
