(R&B) Glenn Jones’ “Show Me” or Howard Hewett’s “Show Me?” (Repost)

This debate topic went up first last year, January 27 2022. Let’s revisit this R&B topic. Sounds like the play?

I love Hip Hop, but R&B is just as deeply rooted in me. That’s why, even though this is a Hip Hop blog site, I do an R&B debate once a week (wink – wink)! Also, deeply rooted in me is an obsession for R&B songs of the same title but different sound. Or has the same meaning, but different grooves. “Show Me” by Glenn Jones and Howard Hewett, two legendary crooners, is a perfect example.

Between the two, Glenn Jones release his version first in 1983. It was from his debut EP, Everybody Loves a Winner.

The song was about a romantic setting that, with guidance, could elevate.

“I’ve been watching you,” Glenn sings. “Just to see how far you would go. You’re gonna have to prove, make a move and let it show.”

The single reached the number 3 spot on the R&B charts.

Howard Hewett released his version seven years later. Initially known for being the lead singer of group Shalamar, he was a thriving solo artist by this time. “Show Me,” released from his self-titled, was asking for direction, too. The Akron Ohio native had visions of taking the romance to higher heights, he just needed the approval.

“Every day my imagination anticipates,” Howard sings. “Ways I can show you how much I love you. Candy, flowers, priceless pearls; romantic trips around the world, baby, just think.”

The single peaked at 33 spot on the Billboard’s Adult Contemporary charts.

Both songs are asking for direction with such an aura only an R&B track can provide. Of course, you couldn’t go wrong with either one during a romantic setting. However, if you had one last request for the DJ before the lights comes on, which song would you pick?
