Craig Mack’s ‘Project: Funk Da World’; Classic!, Dope, Regular, or Garbage?

In 1993, Sean “Diddy” Combs launched Bad Boy Records. The following year, his two new signees, The Notorious B.I.G. and Craig Mack dropped their solo debuts, Ready to Die and Project: Funk da World, respectively. I would like to discuss the latter.

Craig Mack released Project: Funk da World, one week after Ready to Die. “Flavor In Ya Ear,” the first single, was released in the Summer of ’94. It created some buzz, however, it was minimum compared to “Flavor In Ya Ear (Remix).”

“Flavor In Ya Ear (Remix),” featuring The Notorious B.I.G., Busta Rhythms, and LL Cool J, was used as additional promotion. It is considered a classic, but unfortunately, it wasn’t on the album.

Mack would follow up with the Easy Mo Bee-produced, “Get Down.” It reached the Top 40, peaking at the number 38 spot on the Hot 100. It eventually achieved Gold status.

“Making Moves With Puff” was the album’s third single.

Craig and Puff lean on legendary producer, Easy Mo Be, for much the album’s production.

Over twenty years later, Big’s Ready To Die has been stamped as a classic. Whereas, Mack’s Project: Funk da World rarely gets mentioned despite receiving good reviews and eventually going Gold. Did he get a fair trial? Was his debut just as dope? Let’s chop it up!

RIP Craig Mack and The Notorious B.I.G.
