Warren G’s ‘Regulate…G-Funk Era’; Classic!, Dope, Regular, or Garbage?

When we think of G-Funk, albums such as The Chronic and Doggystyle, by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, among others, come to mind. However, rarely does Regulate… G-Funk Era by Warren G get the acknowledgment equivalent to the aforementioned. Let’s talk about it.

Despite contributing to The Chronic and Doggystyle, two of Death Row releases, and being the half-brother Dr. Dre, Warren G released the album under Def Jam. “Regulate,” the album’s first single, hit the streets like a new drug in 1994.

Featuring Nate Dogg, the Michael McDonald-sampled was one of the best storytelling songs during the time.

When it came to putting on for Long Beach, California, no one did it on a national level the way Snoop Dogg did. However, Warren matched his representation in “This D.J.,” the album’s second single. It crossed over by reaching the top 10 of Billboard Hot 100.

Regulate…G-Funk Era found success on the charts, reaching numbers 2 and 1 on US Billboard 200 and US Top R&B/Hip-Hop. The album was certified 3X platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

It’s obvious that Regulate…G-Funk Era was formulated from the same pedigree as The Chronic and Doggystyle. However, is it their equal?
