(R&B) Silk’s ‘Tonight’; Classic!, Jammin’, Regular, or Not Impressed?

In 1992, Silk came in, gave us the freak-playbook via albums Lose Control and Silk (self-titled), and disappeared into the kinky night. In 1999, they returned with Tonight, no pun intended. Let’s talk about it.

After taking some time off, Silk dropped their third album, Tonight March 23 1999. Keith Sweat had worked with them on their debut. However, by the time Tonight was released, Timzo, Jimmy, John-John, Big G, and Lil G, had shown they could pull it off without Keith. “If You (Lovin’ Me),” the album’s first single, was clear indication they were trending in the right direction.

“If You” was a crossover hit, peaking at number 13 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The album is titled, Tonight. And back in Alabama, we were told that nothing is open after midnight but the Waffle House and legs. If you’re located at the latter, “Meeting in my Bedroom,” the album’s second single, is an ideal setting.

Their trademark harmonies were more sophisticated on this album, which they got praised for. However, many thought the album may have been a little more sexualized with tracks such as “I Wonder” and “Sexcellent,” among others. Again, if you’re not at the Waffle House, where’s the issue?

Lil G and producer, Darrell “Delite” Allamby handled most of the album’s production.

Tonight reached the number 21 spot on the US Billboard 200, and number 8 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It was certified Platinum by RIAA.

Tonight is a go to album, especially if it’s late-night and you’re not at the Waffle House.
