(R&B) Avant’s ‘Private Room’ or Tank’s ‘Sex, Love & Pain’?

As the 90s R&B struck midnight, the genre was simultaneously introducing a crop of new crooners at dawn. Avant and Tank were two of those newbies. Let’s chop it up about their third albums, Private Room and Sex, Love, & Pain.

Between the two, Avant dropped Private Room first. “Read Your Mind,” a song about the Cleveland-native’s abilities to read his partner’s sensual thoughts, was the album’s first single.

“Read Your Mind” found success on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at the number 13 spot.

With a title such as Private Room, sexual-induced songs such as “Phone Sex (That’s What’s Up)” and “Feast” seem to have fit the bill. However, the album wasn’t a porno flick in R&B form. “Don’t Take Your Love Away” was a go to song for the guy that made a mistake in the relationship and is attempting to right his wrongs.

Private Room found success, peaking at number 4 and number 18 spot on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and US Billboard 200, respectively.

Tank released, Sex, Love, & Pain four years later. A plead for such was revealed in the opening track.

“I don’t want nothing, if I can’t have it all,” The DMV-native sings. “If I gotta beg for it on my knees and crawl.”

A relationship is not a relationship if it doesn’t involve imperfections. Admittedly, Tank wasn’t off the hook. His imperfect ways were felt through tracks such as “I’m Coming Home to You” and “Please Don’t Go,” the album’s lead single.

Though a track like “I Hate U” provided the pain part of the album, “My Body” and “When” provided the sex aspect.

Sex, Love, & Pain did extremely well on the charts, reaching number 1 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and peaking at the number 2 spot on US Billboard 200.

You have two albums that could set a romantic evening off proper. But if you had to chose one to set it off, which one would it be?
