Snoop Dogg’s ‘Tha Last Meal’; Classic!, Dope, Regular, or Garbage?

By the turn of the 21st century, Snoop Dogg was considered a veteran in the rap game. And as a vet, the next progressive step was to boss up and start his own label. However, before he could embark on his entrepreneurial journey, he had to fulfill one more album obligation. With that said, let’s chop it up about Tha Last Meal.

Released through No Limit, Doggy Style, and Priority Records on December 19, 2000, Snoop decided to go in a different direction in terms of sound. This proved evident with the album’s first single “Snoop Dogg (What’s My Name II)”, which was produced by Timbaland.

“Snoop Dogg (What’s My Name II)” reached the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at the number 77 spot.

Though creativity took Snoop in a different direction, he didn’t go too far left – no pun intended – from the subject matter that we had grown accustomed to. Songs such as the Cameo-sampled “Wrong Idea” featuring Bad Azz, Kokane, and Lil’ ½ Dead, “Lay Low,” and “Stacey Adams,” among others, gave us the West Coast vibe.

“Ready 2 Ryde” featuring Eve, symbolized peace between DMX and Kurupt, Snoop’s fellow Dogg Pound alumni, who were at odds at the time.

Tha Last Meal peaked at the number 4 position on the Billboard 200. However, it found more success on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, reaching the top spot. The album was certified Platinum.

It was a magical moment in time when we heard Snoop’s smooth laid back flow on Doggystyle. Though it seemed too hard to recapture, he appeared to have gotten close on Tha Last Meal. Or did he? Let’s chop it up…
