(R&B) Bryson Tiller’s ‘TRAPSOUL’; Classic!, Jammin’, Regular, or Not Impressed?

The city of Louisville, Kentucky is known for many great things such as the birthplace of Muhammad Ali, the Kentucky Derby, Louisville Slugger baseball bats, KFC corporation, and Louisville University sports, among other things. However, the recognition hasn’t been quite equivalent musically. And that’s factoring in the contributions from the late-Static Major and his group Playa. However, it is something about Bryson Tiller and his TRAPSOUL album that helped put the music radar right on the 502.

Released in 2015, TRAPSOUL was the prototype for the new wave of R&B. It was created with love in mind, the traditional foundation. However, the delivery was a contrast from years past.

“Don’t,” Tiller’s first single, showed that even a street guy can campaign to treat a taken female better. It may not have been a Babyface’s “Soon as I Get Home,” but the plea was just as strong.

“Don’t” peaked at the number 13 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100.

“Exchange,” the second single, let us fans know that the Louisville slugger had more hits at the plate. The K.P. & Envyi — sampled reached the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. In addition, earning him Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song.

Tiller gave us the Soul. But let’s not fail to acknowledge the Trap with tracks such as “Rambo” and “502 Come Up.”

“So how the f**k can people back home say I shook on my n****s,” Tiller spits in the latter. “Your two cents ain’t working for me. All you n****s sound commercial to me, man, I don’t like commercial n****s, Please shut the f**k up before I hurt you.”

TRAPSOUL reached number 8 on the US Billboard 200 and number 2 on US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

When you put on for your city, it will be acknowledged.  In 2016, Tiller received the Key to the City from his hometown. In addition, Louisville gave him his own holiday, officially naming March 12th “Bryson Tiller Day.”

Not bad for a guy that just two years prior, was on Papa John’s and UPS’ payroll, simultaneously, trying to make ends meet for his newborn daughter.
