Birdman & Lil Wayne’s ‘Like Father, Like Son’; Classic!, Dope, Regular, or Garbage?

When you mention Lil Wayne and Birdman, obviously Cash Money Records comes to mind. But what about their joint album, Like Father, Like Son? Let’s chop it up!

Released in 2006, the father and son duo got our attention with lead single, “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy.” It immediately became the jam of the summer.

“Stuntin’ Like My Daddy” peaked at number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 7 on US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

“Leather So Soft,” “Know What I’m Doin’,” and “You Ain’t Know” were the other singles.

Baby and Wayne reached out to, at the time, high-demand Scott Storch for production. However, his contribution was limited to one track, “You Ain’t Know.” T-Mix, former Suave House in-house producer, handled majority of the album’s production.

Although the album got the approval of the streets and most critics, the New Orleans-natives received flack for not speaking on a more sensitive matter such as Katrina. It only had been a few months prior since the fatal hurricane ripped through their hometown and forced a good bit of New Orleans natives to relocate, including Cash Money’s headquarters. Baby and Wayne mentioned a relocation to Miami, Florida in “Don’t Die,” but failed to detail why.

Like Father, Like Son debuted at number 3 on the US Billboard 200 chart. It was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Obviously, it wasn’t a perfect album. But no album is. I’m sure if you look hard enough, you’d find imperfections in Thriller. Then again, maybe not. But you get the point.
