(R&B) Avant’s ‘Private Room’; Classic!, Jammin’, Regular, or Not Impressed?

As the 90s R&B struck midnight, the genre was simultaneously introducing a crop of new crooners at dawn. Avant was one of those newbies introduced. Let’s chop it up about Private Room, his third album.

Since the early part of his career, Avant has been met with comparison to R. Kelly. To be fair, you can contribute the likeness to the facial resemblance. And honestly, you could hear some Kelz influences in Avant’s music too. However, the Cleveland-native took the necessary incentive to separate himself with “Read Your Mind,” the album’s first singe.

The song about stop about beating around the bush about your sexual desires found success on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at the number 13 spot.

With a title such as Private Room, sexual-induced songs such as “Phone Sex (That’s What’s Up)” and “Feast” seem to have fit the bill. However, the album wasn’t a porno flick in R&B form. “Don’t Take Your Love Away” was a go to song for the guy that made a mistake in the relationship and is attempting to right his wrongs.

Though Keke Wyatt showed to be a great collaborator throughout the years, Olivia gave her a run for her money in “Seems to Be,” a song about a long-term love affair taking a left turn somewhere along the path.

Private Room found success, peaking at number 4 and number 18 spot on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and US Billboard 200, respectively.

Personally, I think some of the tracks on Private Room is still jammin’. However, is the album jammin’ as a complete project? Better yet, is the album a classic? You guys tell me what you think.
