(R&B) Meli’sa Morgan’s ‘Do Me, Baby’; Classic!, Jammin’, Regular, or Not Impressed?

When it comes to 80s R&B, albums such as The Night I Felt in Love, Whitney Houston, and Rapture by Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, and Anita Baker, among others, remain vivid in our memory bank. However, I recall Do Me, Baby by Meli’sa Morgan getting it’s share of spins as well. Let’s discuss it.

Released in 1986, Do Me, Baby — the album & title track — came with familiarity. It was a cover of Prince’s jam, which was released four years prior. Despite it being one of the more sensual songs of the time, unfortunately, his version didn’t chart. However, Meli’sa’s version did the complete opposite, reaching number 1 on R&B & 46 on Pop charts.

“I’ll Give It When I Want It” was along the lines of intimacy as well. However, there’s more to a relationship than just being intimate. Uncertainty and insecurities come with the bit. The Queens-native expressed concerns like no other songstress in “Do You Still Love Me?”

The album’s second single reached number 5 on R&B charts.

“Fool’s Paradise,” the third single, reached number 24 on the R&B charts. Jay-Z would sample it in “Can’t Knock the Hustle.”

Do Me, Baby reached 41 on Billboard 200 & number 4 on US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

In hindsight, Meli’sa’s Do Me, Baby may not get the recognition it deserves compared to other releases. However, you can’t deny her contributions to 80s love-making soundtrack.
